At Rathfern, we’re passionate about our pioneering approach to learning.

Through our innovative development of learning attributes pupils are encouraged and empowered to challenge, reflect, explore and communicate their thinking in a range of creative ways.

Curriculum aims

Our curriculum is underpinned by the framework of concepts and skills identified in the Global learning programme and Rights respecting schools programme.

These concepts and skills are explored and developed through the themes that make up the curriculum (see below). As well as teaching knowledge and skills, our curriculum is a vehicle for the development of morality, citizenship and a readiness for the world of employment.


The curriculum is organised around half-termly themes, such as The Emperor’s New Clothes (Year 1), The Great Inventors (Year 2) and Hunter Gatherers (Year 3).

By teaching the core subjects of English, Maths and Science within the context of these themes we create a coherent, stimulating and engaging curriculum.

Non-core subjects, including Art & Design, Citizenship, Computing, Design & Technology, Languages, Geography, History, Music, and Physical Education, are also taught within the themes too, providing context and encouraging deeper learning and understanding.

Religious education

Rathfern Primary School assemblyThrough Religious education (RE) children acquire and develop knowledge and understanding of Christianity and the other principal religions represented in Great Britain.

Children learn about concepts specific to a single religion, ones that are common to many religions, and those that are common to all human experience. Rathfern implements the Lewisham Agreed Syllabus.


Rathfern-School-Computing iPadsWe teach Computing within our theme-based curriculum. Children gain the skills, knowledge and understanding they need to continue lifelong learning in our fast-changing world.

The children have access to a range of resources including online learning platforms and handheld, mobile technology only when it supports, enhances or extends pupil learning.
