Physical Education

Boy playing on the bar apparatus. All pupils learn about the importance of health and fitness through gymnastics, dance and games.

We believe that physical education (PE) and sport are an integral part of education – equipping children with the skills and knowledge to lead an active and healthy life.

Each year group is taught by a specialist PE teacher. We encourage sporting competition whilst ensuring that all children are given opportunities to participate in a range of sports activities and have access to a broad and balanced PE curriculum.

We want all pupils to leave Rathfern with a love of sport and be committed to lifelong participation. See a list of our sports and other clubs.

Sports premium

The government is spending over £450 million on improving the provision of PE and sport in primary schools over the three academic years 2013–14, 2014–15 and 2015–16, with money allocated to head teachers.

We plan to spend the allocated funding by continuing to provide sporting provision that was put in place when we received the initial funding last year.

This includes:

  • weekly specialist sports and dance teaching for Reception to Year 6
  • specialist sports coaching for our competitive teams.
  • specialist sports training for all of our staff
  • cost of transport to enable us to use of sports facilities such as : The Bridge, Deptford Green Astro Turf and Ladywell Arena
