Rathfern held a Maths workshop about Algebra for parents led by Mr Carlson a Maths Consultant. The parents shared their prior knowledge of algebra and generated some definitions of their own:
‘It’s like a balance.’
‘It is an equation that uses symbols.’
What it algebra?
“It is not about knowing the rules. It’s about understanding and being able to solve problems.” – Mr Carlson
Mr Carlson challenged parents with a range of problems, this certainly warmed up their brains. Parents were given a variety of different challenges, which could be adapted at home for their children.
Here is one of the warm-up activities. Why not give it a try?
I think of a number. I double it. I add 1. What is my number?
The beauty of a problem like this is that it is open to allow children to be creative and set their own level of challenge.
The hall was packed with parents dedicated to supporting and extending their children’s learning at home in maths. This is the second workshop held at the school for parents and was extremely popular. We hope to see you all at the next one!
