In celebration of National Poetry Day on the 8th of October, Year 5 were set a gymnastics challenge that would spread over 3 lessons. Children were provided with a poem called ‘Fireworks!’ as stimulus for planning a creative sequence. Their challenge involved children creating movement material to convey the words of the poems and use their bodies to express the shapes and movements that fireworks display in the air.

Lazarus Lemur (Challenge)
A small group of children recorded the poem being spoken with dramatic music and firework sounds in the background. Children had the difficult task of adapting their movement sequences to fit the speed of the poem and music appropriately. Children were able to give each other some wonderful constructive feedback to help other groups improve their sequences.
The finished sequences were amazing! Miss Sophie was blown away by the creativity and great imaginations of the children. Year 5 displayed a wide range of gymnastics skills, and challenged themselves to use different directions, levels, speed, moments of synchronisation and canon. Well done Year 5!
