On Wednesday year 2 had a special guest in class who showed the children how to make up a wind up toy. Paul used his expertise as a toy maker and an expert in bugs to help the year 2 children to build and decorate their own wind up, scuttling bugs. The children chose the colour of the card they wanted for their bug and used a template to draw and cut out its body.
They then used a wire frame attached to their card to give the body its structure. The wind up wheels (made out of cotton reels and elastic bands) were fitted to the wire frame to enable the toy to be wound up and to help it move when released. Finally the children could use paper templates, remaining card and pipe cleaners as eyes wings and antennae for their bugs.
