This term, Year 5 have been studying Rivers. We started off our topic with a trip to Creekside Discovery Centre in Deptford. We got to wade in Deptford Creek – part of the River Ravensbourne, which is one of the tributaries of the Thames. We found out about the history of the area and got to understand some key geographical terminology by seeing it in action.
We also got to look at River habitats and some of the wildlife we can find locally. We used this knowledge in our topic lessons to make a display:
We also visited Limehouse Basin, which used to be a bustling hub of international trade. Here, we learnt about the differences between canals and rivers and got to see how the locks worked by opening and closing the gates. It was a glorious day for learning!
