Year 4 Plastic Weavers

Year 4 have been learning how to weave with recycled plastic. This was inspired by Mrs Maharasingam’s British Council visit to South Africa where she saw decorations made with reeds and woven recycled plastic at Enkhokhokhweni Primary School, Mpumalanga.

We also watched a video about a women’s cooperative in Burkina Faso which combines eco-protection and female empowerment. The women who run the cooperative weave strong bags from recycled plastic. They earn their own money which allows them to support their families.

We thought about what we could make with our woven plastic. We came up with bags, tablecloths, clothes, lamp shades, art on the wall and Christmas decorations.
