Behaviour
At Rathfern, we believe that positive behaviour is essential for effective learning, personal development, and a safe, inclusive school environment. Our behaviour policy is guided by the school’s core values:
- Respect each other
- Always question your best
- Take responsibility
- Help and care about each other
- Everyone matters
These values shape our expectations and interactions across the school community, encouraging children to act with kindness, integrity, and a commitment to their own growth and the wellbeing of others.
We promote a culture of high expectations, where pupils are supported to develop key executive function skills such as response inhibition, emotional control and cognitive flexibility. These skills help children manage their behaviour, make thoughtful decisions, and engage positively with their learning.
Our approach is restorative, focusing on resolving conflict through understanding, accountability, and respectful dialogue. Pupils are encouraged to consider the impact of their actions and take steps to repair relationships and restore trust.
As part of our commitment to social justice, we actively challenge bias and inequality. This includes addressing issues such as adultification, where Black children may be unfairly perceived as older or more responsible than their peers. Staff receive training to recognise and counter this bias, ensuring that all children are treated fairly and with dignity.
While we have clear expectations for behaviour, we understand that children may need support to meet them. We respond to behaviour concerns with empathy, consistency, and a focus on learning and growth. Serious incidents—such as bullying, discriminatory language, or unsafe conduct—are addressed promptly and fairly, with appropriate support for all involved.
Our behaviour policy applies throughout the school day, including playtimes and lunchtimes, and is supported by strong partnerships with parents and carers. Together, we aim to create a nurturing environment where every child can thrive.
