Global Learning

Our Approach

At Rathfern, we believe that by promoting active and global citizenship, we empower children to understand and respond to the rapidly changing world around them. We build our curriculum around Global Learning Principles to support pupils in recognising their rights, responsibilities and roles as citizens — locally and globally.

What Global Learning Means at Rathfern

Global Learning helps children:

  • understand global issues and connections between people and places

  • see themselves as part of a wider world

  • recognise inequality and injustice

  • think critically and act thoughtfully

  • develop empathy, respect and responsibility

Our Global Learning Principles

These principles aim to:

  • help young people understand their role in a globally interdependent world and explore strategies by which they can make it more just and sustainable

  • familiarise pupils with the ideas of interdependence, development, globalisation and sustainability

  • enable teachers to help pupils think in terms of social justice rather than charity

  • stimulate critical thinking about global issues, both individually and across the school

  • help promote greater awareness of poverty and sustainability, and explore these meaningfully in the classroom

Our Vision for Pupils

Children at Rathfern are encouraged to become critical, active and engaged learners, who understand their responsibilities as citizens and are inspired to promote equality, social justice and positive change in their communities and beyond.
