Physical Education

We believe that physical education (PE) and sport are an integral part of education – equipping children with the skills and knowledge to lead an active and healthy life.

Each year group is taught by a specialist PE teacher. We encourage sporting competition whilst ensuring that all children are given opportunities to participate in a range of sports activities and have access to a broad and balanced PE curriculum.

Sports premium

What is the PE & Sport Premium?

The primary Physical Education and Sport Premium was introduced in March 2013 when the government agreed to provide funding of £450 million over 3 academic years. In 2017 this figure was doubled to £320 million, and this remained the same in 2018/19. The DfE have confirmed that this figure will continue to remain doubled for 2019/20.

The funding is designed to help primary schools improve the provision of physical education and school sport in primary schools across England. The money is allocated directly to head-teachers, and has been ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on the provision for PE and sport in schools.

How we have spent the money

We are using the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the provision for PE and sport’ for the benefit of all pupils in the school. We are looking to encourage the development of healthy, active lifestyles, and get as many children participating in regular competitive sport as possible.

We have used the 5 key indicators suggested by the Association for Physical Education as guidance for the way that we spend the funding. The 5 key indicators are:-

  1. The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity
  2. The profile of PE and sport is raised across the school as a tool for whole-school improvement
  3. Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
  4. Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils
  5. Increased participation in competitive sport

We were looking to spend the funding we received to:-

  • Increase participation in the School Games and Lewisham Sports     Co-ordinators competitions/festivals
  • Provide additional extra-curricular sports opportunities at playtimes/lunchtimes
  • Provide existing staff with training or resources to help them teach PE and sport more confidently and effectively
  • Hire qualified sports coaches to work alongside PE specialist to support the development of teaching in specific sporting areas
  • Run sports competitions
  • Introduce new sports or activities and encourage more pupils to take part
  • Support and involve the least active children by running or extending school sports clubs, holiday clubs and Change4Life clubs
  • Provide access to improved facilities and spaces for PE lessons and training sessions

The Spend Breakdown and Impact Review document details what we spent the school sports premium on in the academic year of 2018/19 and the impact it has had on provision, opportunity and performance. Our total funding for 2018/19 was £20,089

PE Premium Planned Spend Breakdown & Impact 2019-2020

Planned PE premium spend 2019-20

We expect to receive a total of £18,495 in funding this academic year 2019/20. We plan to continue areas of success from last year, and develop some areas further. Therefore the sports premium fund will be spent on the following areas:-

  • Association of Lewisham Primary School Sport (ALPS membership) – we aim to increase the amount of events that we attend and be awarded with a Gold School Game Mark.
  • Travel for sporting events
  • Year 5/6 swimming assessment and top-up sessions
  • An inspiring GB athlete visit
  • Organise 3 experienced football managers to work with our Saturday School League teams
  • Training opportunities for staff to work with specialist sports coaches
  • Providing sports teams with valuable outside experiences (e.g. professional sport events, matches, dance/gym performances) to improve sport knowledge and inspire.
  • Continue with current extra-curricular provision to continue to engage as many children in sport as possible, including those identified as less active.

The Planned Spend and Expected Impact document details what we plan to spend the school sports premium on in the academic year of 2019/20 and the expected impact it will have on provision. Our planned spend is a working document that will be updated throughout the year.

Swimming Attainment

It is now a requirement from The Department for Education for schools to publish how many Year 6 pupils have met the national curriculum requirements relating to swimming and water safety.
By the end of Year 6 children should be able to…

• swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
• use a range of strokes effectively (breast stroke, back stroke, front crawl)
• perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations be able to perform a safe self-rescue.

Due to Covid-19 planned swimming assessments for Year 6 pupils were unable to take place in the previous Summer term. Assessments for the current Year 6 cohort (202-21) have been scheduled during the Summer term.

Details of the number of children who have met curriculum objectives in Year 6 (2018-2019) can be found below.

Next steps:-
•To use the premium funding for assessment session for our current year 6 cohort to identify pupils not meeting the National Curriculum swimming requirements
• Using the PE premium to provide additional swimming provision for identified/target children
• Using the PE premium to provide transport for weekly swimming lessons for target children over a 6-8 week period
• Sharing of swimming opportunities and available lessons to parents.
